When Skye told Bob what was going on, he offered to accompany her, but she turned him down.

He smiled. “No worries. Though I was hoping to take you for a walk along the beach. The only thing we’ll miss out on is some mocktails at the at the beach juice bar.”

“That sounds like a great idea. Maybe next time? Thanks for everything!” Skye gave him a fleeting hug and left.

Skye drove the VW Kombi like a freight train—nothing was going to get in her way. Fortunately for her, it was evening and traffic was light.

When she brought the van to a screeching halt at the campsite, she saw the shadowy silhouette of Vic picking up one of the wooden chairs. Suddenly, he threw it at a nearby table.

Kris tried to intervene, but Matt pushed her out of the way and headed for Vic. Kris stepped back and watched as Matt wrestled the chair from Vic’s grasp.

Skye jumped out of the van and rushed toward them. “Vic! What on earth are you doing?”

Vic glanced at her, and she saw the rage in his eyes.

“Sit down, man!” Matt yelled.

“Stay out of my business!” Vic reached for another chair. Matt grabbed him and shoved him toward an empty bench.

“Sit! Now!” Matt commanded, pushing him down.

Vic grudgingly sat on the bench. He tried to rise again seconds later, but Matt kept his shoulders down.

“What’s gotten into you?” Matt asked.

Vic leaned over, burying his face in his hands and sitting motionless.

Skye quickly scanned the place. There were chairs tossed around, and the tent Vic was sleeping in had collapsed. Thankfully, other than that, nothing seemed beyond repair.

Skye pulled Kris to the side. “What’s going on with him?”

“Girl, where do I start? He was ranting about something all evening while in his tent. I tried to talk to him, but he’s in his own world. That’s when I called Matt to talk to him. But when Vic saw Matt, he started going crazy.”

“So Matt just got here?”

“Yeah.”

“What was Vic ranting about?”

“It was hard to tell because he would shout or mumble about things that didn’t seem to connect.”

Skye touched Kris’s forearm. “But he didn’t attack you, right?”

“No, he didn’t, thank God.”

“Okay. Let me see what Matt says.”

Skye moved closer to Vic and Matt. Vic was still sitting with his head in his hands. Matt must have sensed her presence because he looked up.

“Let’s give him a minute to pull it together,” Matt whispered.

Skye held back her frustration as she tried to make sense of everything. Was Vic grieving his wife? It would be perfectly normal. He’d hardly had time to mourn before being taken in for interrogation. And from what she could recall from the time she dated him, he didn’t have any emotional or anger management issues. This outburst had to be due to Tracy’s death.

Vic slowly lifted his head and looked up at them. His bloodshot eyes rested on her.

“Sparky. You look great.”

An odd comment after what had just happened. Skye sighed. “Thanks. Are you okay?”

“I’ve been better.
